Essex is at the southern tip of Glacier National Park on US Hwy 2. Originally a rail stop for the Great Northern Railway, the Izaac Walton Inn was built to house railroad workers. Today the area is home to a winter wonderland of groomed cross country ski trails and an oasis outpost in the great north woods. On your way to Essex, be sure to stop at Goat Lick, overlooking the upper Middle Fork of the Flathead River and see if you can spot mountain goats clinging to the rock cliff faces along the river.
